This is a companion to the video "We've been radically misunderstanding the Olivet Discourse." It is for the person who grew up hearing that Matthew 24 is a coded map of the end of the world, felt a small mismatch every time they actually read the chapter, and never said so out loud. If that is you, you are in good company, and you are about to read the chapter with fresh eyes.
Here is how to use it. Watch the video first if you can. Then open your Bible to Matthew 24 and keep it open beside you. Read "The teaching" straight through, because it carries the whole argument on its own. Then work through "The passages" slowly, with a pen, checking every quotation against your own Bible. Save "Questions to sit with" for last, and answer them on paper, not just in your head.
One thing before we start. Being right about the timing of this chapter does not save anyone. Faith in Jesus does. Good and serious Christians land all over the map on Matthew 24, and none of us should break fellowship over it. So hold this study gently: be convinced by the text if the text convinces you, and stay kind toward everyone who reads it differently. The goal is not to win an argument. It is to let Jesus answer the question he was actually asked.
Why does it matter? Because what you believe about this chapter quietly shapes how you carry the future. A.W. Tozer put it plainly: "What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us" (Tozer, The Knowledge of the Holy). If Matthew 24 is a countdown to destruction, you will scan the news for signs of doom. If it is a promise Jesus already kept, you get to walk into the future with hope. Same chapter, two very different ways to live.
