How to know (and do) God's will without losing your mind: the study guide

The decision you can't make and the sin you can't quit are one problem with one first move, and this guide walks that move slowly, hands you every passage in full, and describes the roomy life waiting on the far side of it.

How to Know (& DO!) God's Will Without Losing Your Mind

Watch it first if you can, then read with your Bible open.

Start here

Maybe there is a decision sitting in front of you right now, and you have prayed about it for weeks, and the thought underneath the praying is, "What if God has one right answer and I pick the wrong one?" Or maybe there is a temptation you keep losing to, and the thought underneath that one is, "Why can't I just try harder?" I know both thoughts from the inside. This guide is for the person carrying either one, and especially for the person carrying both and assuming they are unrelated.

This is the written companion to the video. The video uses a game called Tsuro to make its points; this guide makes the same points with plainer pictures, so you can read it without ever having seen the game. It goes further than the video can into the Hebrew and Greek, the history, and the passages, and it stops more often to ask what you would do with each piece. Read "The teaching" straight through once with nothing else open. Then come back with a Bible and a pen for "The passages" and "Questions to sit with," one sitting at a time.

Why should you care? Because the two thoughts above have the same engine, and that engine is eating your peace. If I am right about what Paul and David and the Preacher of Ecclesiastes say, then the path out of the frozen decision and the path out of the losing fight are one path, it is short, and what is on the other side of it is better than you have been told. I want to show you that from the text, so that you can check me.

Now to the passages themselves. Read each one slowly, in full, with your Bible open beside you.

Where is God in our darkest tragedies? The study guide

God does act, and most often he acts through human hands. Nobody earned a death, and the Bible holds back one answer on purpose. This guide walks that argument slowly, gives you every passage in full, and hands you three things to do while your questions are still open.

Why N.T. Wright says God changes his mind

By the end of this guide you will be able to read the passages where God regrets and relents as honest descriptions of a God who truly responds, and you will see why that makes your prayers count and your grief something God shares.
