"Church" or ekklesia: what the New Testament means by the word
By the end of this guide you will be able to trace the word behind "church" through your own Bible and see the gathering Jesus and Paul actually had in mind: a people, in homes, around a table, where everyone brings something and everyone waits for one another.

“Church” or Ekklesia? What we’ve all COMPLETELY missed about the community of God.
Watch it first if you can, then read with your Bible open.

This is a companion to the video "'Church' or Ekklesia? What we all COMPLETELY missed from the New Testament." It is for the person who loves Jesus and cannot find a room where they fit. Maybe you left. Maybe you are still in the building, singing the songs, and feeling invisible. Or maybe you never went anywhere and your faith just feels boxed up: an hour on Sunday morning, and the rest of the week running on its own power. If any of that is you, I wrote this with you in mind, and I think the text has better news for you than you have been told.
Here is how to use it. Watch the video first if you can. Then open your Bible and keep it open beside you. Read "The teaching" straight through, because it carries the whole argument on its own. Then work "The passages" slowly, with a pen, checking every quotation against your own Bible. Save "Questions to sit with" for last, and answer them on paper, where you cannot fudge.
Two things before we start. First, being right about what the church is does not save anyone. Faith in Christ saves you. I have friends all over the map on this, people who pastor congregations of thousands and people who meet in a living room with six, and every one of them loves the Lord and loves others. I am going to argue hard, because I think the text is clear, but nothing in this guide is a reason to divide from a brother or sister. Second, a housekeeping note: the Bible on screen in the video is the NASB2020, and the quotations in this guide are from the NASB1995, so you will see small wording differences ("brethren" where the video says "brothers and sisters," for instance). The meaning holds either way.
It matters because the word "church" shows up in your life every week, and what you think it means decides what you do with your money, your time, and your people. If "church" means a building and the organization that runs it, then following Jesus becomes something you attend. If it means what the New Testament means by it, following Jesus becomes something you live, with a family, around a table. Same word. Two very different lives.
