When I first discovered Steve Gregg’s biblical teaching years ago, it was like finding water in a desert. Here was someone who approached Scripture with both intellectual rigor and humble openness – something sadly rare in Christian teaching. Last week, I was blessed to finally speak with Steve directly in what became one of the most affirming, encouraging conversations of my ministry journey. For those unfamiliar with his work, Steve Gregg has been faithfully teaching Scripture for over 50 years. He hosts The Narrow Path radio program, has taught verse-by-verse through the entire Bible multiple times, and has written several books examining different theological viewpoints.

A Different Approach to Ministry

What makes Steve’s ministry distinctive isn’t just his content but his approach.

For his entire career, he has never:

• Charged for his teaching or ministry
• Accepted a regular salary from any organization
• Compromised his biblical understanding to fit denominational requirements
• Claimed authority based on position rather than faithful biblical teaching

This approach has freed him to follow Scripture wherever it leads, even when it meant changing long-held views or challenging popular interpretations. Steve shared how he gradually moved from dispensationalism to amillennialism simply by studying Scripture more deeply – not because any institution required it.

The People Are the Church

Perhaps the most powerful part of our conversation centered on ecclesiology – what the Bible teaches about church. Steve articulated what I’ve felt for years but struggled to express: **The church is not an institution but the people themselves.**

The New Testament never portrays church as:

• A building – A 501(c)3 organization
• A hierarchical structure with offices
• A Sunday event you attend Instead, it’s a family of believers walking together, with leadership emerging organically through service and example – not through titles or positions.

As Steve explained, “Jesus didn’t have an institutional idea of the body of Christ. He had an organic family idea.” This perspective transforms how we understand leadership. Biblical leaders don’t exercise authority over others but serve from among them. They’re recognized by their character and service, not by filling an “office” that must be staffed.

A Different Eschatology

Steve and I also discussed how our eternal future isn’t about “going to heaven” but about resurrection and New Creation. God’s plan isn’t to destroy earth and take us to heaven, but to renew the entire cosmos and unite heaven and earth once again. This understanding transforms everything about the Christian life. We’re not waiting to escape earth but preparing for its renewal. Our work, relationships, and creative endeavors have eternal significance because they’re part of cultivating the creation God will ultimately restore.

Why This Matters

Why do these perspectives matter? Because they change how we understand:

1. Our identity – We’re citizens of God’s Kingdom now, not just waiting to “go to heaven”

2. Our purpose – We’re called to represent God’s rule and cultivate His creation

3. Our relationships – We’re family members serving one another, not institutional members

4. Our ministry – We serve freely because we’ve freely received
